A Redi-Rock waterfront property masterpiece

Transforming waterfront properties for climate change, beauty and usability
When it comes to protecting British Columbia waterfront properties while enhancing their beauty and functionality, residential landscapers and hardscapers have a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills. Jim and Gerry from Terratech Excavating & Landscape Construction from Nanaimo achieved this on an exceptional waterfront project by combining innovative materials, homeowner collaboration, and their vision for an elegant outdoor living space. Here’s how they turned a challenging backyard into a stunning waterfront retreat.
Solving landscape challenges with Redi-Rock
One of the property’s major issues was its limited land exposure to sunlight in the waterfront yard. To address this, Jim and Gerry significantly increased the usable outdoor area by removing 300 loads of granite (which was reused on other job sites) and clearing old brick and debris. This ambitious excavation not only made space for the project but also ensured the backyard could catch extended hours of daily sun. One of the biggest challenges of the job Jim tells us, “The footprint we had to work with was very tight, but with Redi-Rock we were able to get into the tight corners and create a stair system down to the shoreline.”
Initially, the homeowners considered poured concrete walls for the retaining structures. However, Terratech proposed Redi-Rock as a cost-effective and visually striking alternative. Jim explains his rational, “Building a free standing rock wall is arduous to get it right which takes more time. It also takes more maintenance from home owners over time. Redi-Rock just has so much to offer in terms of engineered stability, longevity and aesthetics. So dollar for dollar it can be more cost effective.” The results were remarkable:
- Cost savings: The poured concrete option was quoted at $250,000, whereas using Redi-Rock came in at just $90,000.
- Aesthetic appeal: The Ledgestone series offered a natural stone look that elevated the entire project’s visual impact. “The owners picked Ledgestone based on colour preference, the shape of the stone, and the texture. The ocean rocks at the base of the wall blend wonderfully with the natural rock.
- Property value boost: The homeowners reported an exponential increase in property value, “in the hundreds of thousands, if not more.”
A showcase of innovation
The project’s centrepiece was an amazing infinity deck, created by pouring stamped concrete with a dye and acid wash application up to the lip of the Redi-Rock top blocks. This design gave the outdoor space a seamless and luxurious feel, ideal for entertaining or relaxing by the waterfront. In addition, the Redi-Rock wall is designed to withstand the high tides and storm surges that the BC coasts are prone to. This wall will help evade natural erosion and reduction of land use between the sea and the house.
Unique features made this project truly special:
- Custom railings: A one-of-a-kind boat stanchion system was integrated into the wall structure, adding a nautical flair and functional railing solution.
- Lighting & irrigation: Custom garden lighting, spotlights, and irrigation systems were built into the lower-tier retaining walls, enhancing usability and ambiance.
- Soft landscaping: Artificial turf was installed up to the edge of the infinity deck to create a soft, visually stunning area for the family’s dog to enjoy.
More than a backyard with a stunning view
Beyond aesthetics, the project included practical and luxurious additions that transformed the backyard into a multi-functional outdoor haven. An outdoor kitchen, additional railings, and gates are set to be completed further elevating the property’s appeal.
The homeowners praised Hyland Precast’s Redi-Rock as a “unique product” that was perfect for the project, saying it “worked extremely well with their vision.” They emphasized that it wasn’t just about retaining walls—it was about creating a lifestyle.
Why landscapers should consider Redi-Rock for residential projects
This project highlights the advantages of using Redi-Rock for residential landscaping and hardscaping projects, especially for waterfront properties:
- Cost-effectiveness: Redi-Rock delivers premium results at a fraction of the cost of traditional poured concrete.
- Durability & versatility: Designed to handle structural demands, Redi-Rock offers diverse styles like the Ledgestone series, which blend seamlessly into natural landscapes.
- Property enhancement: From aesthetics to functional additions like lighting and irrigation, Redi-Rock projects can significantly increase a property’s value and usability.
